What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a proposed standard by Jeremy Howard (Answer.AI) for a Markdown file at your domain root that summarizes your site and links its key pages for language models. It is not a crawler control: robots.txt decides which crawlers can access your pages, and llms.txt does not.

What it is not: a confirmed input to AI search. No major AI engine, including ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI features, has been shown to fetch llms.txt or to cite sites more because of it. Google says it does not use it. It is cheap to publish and useful for agents and developer tools that do read it.

Within the practice of generative engine optimization (GEO), llms.txt is the optional one. What is an llms.txt file?

llms.txt is a proposed standard for an optional Markdown summary of your site, placed at yourdomain.com/llms.txt, that lists your key pages for language models. It is not a crawler control: robots.txt decides which crawlers can access your pages, and llms.txt does not. It is useful for agents and developer tools that read it.

Where do I put the llms.txt file?

Upload it to your website's root directory so it is accessible at yourdomain.com/llms.txt. Vercel, Netlify, WordPress, Shopify, and most static hosts support this. For WordPress, use a plugin or drop it in the public folder.

How often should I update my llms.txt?

Regenerate when your site structure changes — new product lines, major content sections, rebrands. For most sites, quarterly updates are enough. Re-run the tool anytime and upload the new version.

Does llms.txt actually improve AI visibility?

No AI engine has been shown to fetch llms.txt or to cite sites more because of it. Google says it does not use it, and Ahrefs (2026) found 97% of llms.txt files received zero requests. It is cheap to publish and does no harm, so treat it as optional. Crawler access, content in the HTML and direct, quotable answers are what AI engines use.

What is the difference between llms.txt and robots.txt?

robots.txt tells crawlers, AI crawlers included, which pages they may fetch, using directives (Allow, Disallow) that crawlers are built to obey. llms.txt is a Markdown summary of your site with no directives: it controls nothing, and whether a tool reads it is up to that tool. Publishing one does not change which crawlers can reach your pages.
