AI Search Statistics 2026: What the Research Actually Shows

Most "AI search statistics" pages repeat numbers that cannot be traced to a study. This page lists only figures with a named, published source, and states what kind of evidence each one is. The short version: specific facts and attributed sources help a page get quoted once it is retrieved, answers near the top of a page are cited more often, and schema markup and FAQ blocks have not been shown to raise citations.

How to read these numbers

  • Controlled or quasi-experimental results compare a change against a baseline and are the strongest evidence here.
  • Correlational results describe pages that were cited. They show what cited pages have in common, not what will happen if you change yours.
  • Numbers from one platform do not automatically carry over to another. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews retrieve and cite differently.

What gets a retrieved page quoted

  1. Quotations raised source visibility by about 41%, statistics by about 25% and source citations by about 25% in generated answers, measured by position-adjusted word count. Keyword stuffing lowered visibility. *(Aggarwal et al., "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization", KDD 2024 — causal, measured within a fixed set of sources that were already retrieved.)*
  2. Generic content rewrites were mostly ineffective at raising AI citation; only page-specific factual changes were worth making. *(C-SEO Bench, NeurIPS 2025 — controlled benchmark.)*

The GEO paper is the most cited study in this field, and its limit matters: it measured how much of an answer a source earned once it was already among the retrieved sources. It does not measure how often a page gets retrieved.

Where cited passages sit

  1. 44.2% of ChatGPT citations came from the first 30% of the page. *(Kevin Indig / Search Engine Land, 2026, about 1.2M ChatGPT citations — correlational.)*
  2. Definitional language appeared in 36.2% of cited passages vs 20.2% of non-cited ones in the same analysis. *(Kevin Indig / Search Engine Land, 2026 — correlational.)*
  3. Pages whose headings closely matched the query were cited 41% of the time vs 29% for pages whose headings did not. *(AirOps 2026 query fan-out report, 16.8k queries — correlational.)*
  4. Longer sections were cited more: sections under 50 words averaged 2.7 AI citations, 120–180 words 4.6 and over 180 words 5.7. The study found no length sweet spot. *(SE Ranking, 129k domains, 2025 — correlational.)*

Freshness

  1. AI-cited URLs were 25.7% fresher than organic results. The effect was strongest for ChatGPT and near zero for Google AI Overviews. *(Ahrefs, 17M AI citations, 2025 — correlational.)*

Tactics without evidence of a citation effect

  1. Schema markup: adding JSON-LD had no significant effect on ChatGPT or Google AI Mode citations. It still helps rich results and how accurately engines describe the page. *(Ahrefs schema difference-in-differences study, 2026 — quasi-experimental.)*
  2. FAQ blocks correlated slightly negatively with AI citations. *(SE Ranking, 129k domains, 2025 — correlational.)*
  3. llms.txt: we found no published study linking an llms.txt file to more AI citations, and no major AI platform has confirmed it reads the file when choosing sources.

What these numbers mean for marketers

Retrievability comes first. None of the content findings apply to a page an engine cannot fetch. Allow AI search crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot) in robots.txt, and make sure the main content is in the HTML without JavaScript, because several AI crawlers do not run it.

Answer early and specifically. The strongest patterns are a direct answer near the top of the page, definitional sentences, and concrete facts with a named source.

Spend less on markup and file formats. Schema, FAQ blocks and llms.txt are cheap to add, but the evidence does not support them as ways to get cited more often.

Measure your own results. Correlational studies tell you where to start, not what will work on your page. Track a fixed prompt set before and after each change. Run a free scan at [prominara.com](https://prominara.com) to check whether AI engines can reach and quote your pages.

Questions

Frequently asked questions.

01

Are these AI search statistics verified?

Every number on this page names its source and says what kind of evidence it is: a controlled experiment, a quasi-experiment, or a correlational analysis. We removed figures we could not trace to a published study. Correlational numbers describe pages that were cited; they do not prove that changing your page will get it cited.

02

Does schema markup increase AI citations?

Not on current evidence. An Ahrefs difference-in-differences study (2026) found that adding JSON-LD had no significant effect on ChatGPT or Google AI Mode citations. Schema still helps rich results and how accurately engines describe your facts.

03

Where on a page do AI engines take their citations from?

An analysis of about 1.2M ChatGPT citations (Kevin Indig / Search Engine Land, 2026) found 44.2% came from the first 30% of the page. Putting the direct answer near the top is the practical takeaway.

04

Does content freshness matter for AI citations?

It depends on the platform. An Ahrefs analysis of 17M AI citations (2025) found AI-cited URLs were 25.7% fresher than organic results, with the effect strongest for ChatGPT and near zero for Google AI Overviews. Freshness matters most for time-sensitive topics.

05

Do FAQ sections help pages get cited by AI?

Not as a format. An SE Ranking study of 129k domains (2025) found FAQ blocks correlated slightly negatively with AI citations. Answering real questions with specific facts helps; adding a FAQ block for its own sake does not.
